Lake Maggiore, what to see? Borromean Islands
The Borromean Islands are an excellent choice for those who want to do a complete visit because they have all day free, but also for those who want to do only a half-day visit because they want to spend a more relaxing day or they simply have less time. In fact, it is not necessary to visit all three islands in one day to have a great day.
Stresa is one of the most famous towns on Lake Maggiore and it shows all its magnificence thanks to its luxurious hotels, amazing gardens and unique view of Isola Bella. To understand better, watch the following video. You can activate the subtitles in English.
Lake Maggiore Italy things to do and amazing towns: Stresa Lago Maggiore
Mottarone is the mountain that lies behind Stresa and is easily accessible by car. There are 2 roads: one a little longer and more winding which is free, and another is more convenient but requires the payment of a toll.
In any case, it is really worth going up the Mottarone as the real peculiarity of this place is that it offers a magnificent view of 7 lakes! On days when the sky is particularly clear, the spectacle is unforgettable.
Lake Maggiore Italy things to do: Mottarone Stresa.
As for nature on Mottarone, there is not only a beautiful view but you can also find some nice animals such as donkeys and cows.
For fun lovers on the Mottarone, there is Alpyland: a rail bob with which you can descend along a part of the mountain in a very fun way. The adjustable speed makes it suitable for everyone … even the less intrepid.
After all these activities, if you may be hungry: no problem because you can enjoy excellent food in one of the restaurants that we find right here. Surely a good lunch is never refused!
If you want to know more, go to the following post: Mottarone Stresa Lake Maggiore. On this page, you also find the name of the seven lakes you can see from the Mottarone.
3. Sasso del Ferro Laveno
The Sasso del Ferro is located just above Laveno. It can be reached by cable car or by following a path but the most convenient option is certainly the cable car you find in Laveno.
We do not have a view of the 7 lakes from here, but the view is beautiful: you can see the entire Borromean Gulf.
A dinner here is always a special event. If, on the other hand, you prefer a more low-budget or simpler trip, you can also opt for a picnic or you can have something at the bar. In fact, here at the top of the Sasso del Ferro, there is not only a restaurant but also a bar.
Watch the following video where you can see the Sasso del Ferro and what you can visit in Laveno.

Verbania and Villa Taranto
Verbania is a magnificent location and an excellent place to visit in any season. Verbania is made up of 3 smaller towns: Pallanza, Intra and Suna. Verbania never tires you up.
In Verbania, you can take long walks along the lakefront, visit the magnificent botanical gardens of Villa Taranto, take the boat to the Borromean Islands, the ferry to Laveno and much more.
If you love long walks and relaxation, Verbania is definitely the place for you. In Verbania, there is a magnificent lakeside promenade of several kilometers.
Verbania also has two main beaches: Suna beach and Arena beach.
Verbania also boasts one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the world: I Giardini di Villa Taranto.
The hermitage of Santa Caterina is very characteristic because is built on rock and not much above the lake’s level. It is very suggestive seen from the lake and it is nice to observe the lake from the hermitage itself.
Watch the following video, where you can find out some helpful information on how to get to the Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso and where you can also discover the history of this place.

Text of the video:
Hi Everybody, our next stop? The Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso Lake Maggiore Italy.
The Hermitage of Santa Caterina is in my Top 10 things to see on Lake Maggiore.
It is an extraordinary place as it is set in the rock directly overlooking the waters of Lake Maggiore.
The Hermitage of Santa Caterina is a few kilometers from Laveno.
How to get to the Hermitage?
You have 2 options: by car or by boat.
If you choose the car option, you have to know that once you have parked the car, you have to go down a long staircase of 268 steps, which you then have to go up on the way back.
However, there is the possibility of taking the lift for a fee.
However, the best option to get to the Hermitage of Santa Caterina is by boat.
Much of the beauty, charm, and uniqueness of the hermitage can be appreciated when you observe it from the lake.
You can take the boat to the Hermitage of Santa Caterina from different locations: from Laveno, Stresa, and Verbania Pallanza for example.
Once you arrive at the Hermitage, you don’t need a lot of time to visit it: its main elements are a portico, a courtyard, and a small church.
What is the history of the Hermitage of Santa Caterina?
You can read some historical notes and other information in the subtitles while we still enjoy some scenes of the Hermitage.
According to tradition, the Hermitage was founded in 1170 by Alberto Besozzi, a wealthy local merchant.
This merchant escaped a shipwreck during a lake crossing.
So he made a vow to Saint Catherine to retire for the rest of his life in prayer and solitude in a cave on that stretch of coast and lead a hermit’s life there.
He then had a chapel dedicated to Santa Caterina built, currently visible at the bottom of the church. The chapel dates back to the 12th century.
The chapel was flanked by two other churches built by some Ispra nobles: San Nicola and Santa Maria Nova.
The existence of the two churches is certain, starting from the fourteenth century.
As you can see, our visit is over. At this point, I greet you. Bye, and see you on the next adventure!
Cannero Riviera + Castles of Cannero + Cannobbio
We have decided to include these 3 locations together as they are located in the same area and can be visited on the same day, especially thanks to the boat connections.
Cannero Riviera
Cannero Riviera is a splendid town on Lake Maggiore and is known for its beautiful lakefront and wide beach. To have a better idea about how Cannero is, you can watch the following video. In the video, the town is empty because it is December. In the summertime, Cannero is full of people.
This video starts from the Cannero beach and we go along the entire lakefront.
Then we explore the historic town center with its so characteristic streets. The video ends while we are on the boat for Cannobio. Thanks to this boat tour we enjoy the lake coast view and can see the Castles of Cannero. Watch the video!

Castles of Cannero
The Castles of Cannero have their unique charm. Their shape and location make the mind wander, imagining stories and adventures that took place right here.
In some periods of the year the Castles of Cannero can also be visited inside. If, on the other hand, you simply want to see them more closely, you can take the boat that from Cannero Riviera goes to Cannobio; the boat passes very close to the Castles of Cannero, more precisely between the coast of Lake Maggiore and the Castles of Cannero.

Hi Everybody! We are on the Lake Maggiore. In this video, we see the Castles of Cannero from the boat. We see them first from the boat while sailing from Cannero Riviera to Cannobio.
These 2 villages are on the same side of Lake Maggiore, and therefore navigation is enjoyable as it allows us to admire this beautiful coast from the boat. We also pass very close to the Castles of Cannero and fully grasp their charm.
Now we are on the boat that goes from Luino to Cannero Riviera. Luino is on the opposite shore of Lake Maggiore from Cannero Riviera. This allows us to cross the entire lake going from one bank to another.
The crossing gives us a further away view of the Castles of Cannero, but it gives us beautiful images of this part of Lake Maggiore. We are very close to the border with Switzerland; in fact, Lake Maggiore also goes beyond the Swiss border.
We have now come to the end of this video. I greet you and see you in the following video! Like and subscribe. Bye!
Cannobio
Cannobio is another famous town on Lake Maggiore. Cannobio is located on the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore near the Swiss border. Cannobio is easily recognizable by the row of buildings that directly overlook the main square and the lake.

The Brissago Islands are two islands: the Isola Grande and the Isola Piccola. The Isola Grande can be visited. On the Isola Grande, a botanical garden was created in the late nineteenth century, and a neoclassical villa was built in the 1920s.
Lake Como is more famous intentionally but this doesn’t make it better than Lake Maggiore. Lake Maggiore has amazing and unique places to visit. Lake Como has nothing like the Borromean Islands of Lake Maggiore, Eremo di Santa Caterina or Mount Mottarone, from where you can see seven lakes.
Are there alligators in Lake Maggiore?
No, there are no alligators in Italian lakes like Lake Maggiore, Lake Garda, or Lake Como. You don’t have to worry about alligators, as maybe you can do in Florida or in other states.

Borromean Islands hop on hop off
The Borromean Islands can be reached by boat thanks to the Navigazione del Lago Maggiore service from Verbania, Baveno and Stresa. No reservation is required for the boat to the islands. Just go to the landing stage of the place where you are and buy the tickets.
If you want to visit several islands, you can buy a single ticket and move freely between the chosen islands without a set time: it very similar to a hop on hop off tour. During your visit you will decide the boat’s most suitable time for your tour.
There are also numerous private transport services, especially by speedboat, which take you to the islands.
What are the islands that are part of the Borromean Gulf?
The islands of the Borromean Gulf are 3:
Isola Madre: entirely private and can be visited according to the opening hours and by purchasing the entrance ticket.
Isola Bella. On Isola Bella we find the beautiful Borromeo palace with its gardens. Unlike the Isola Madre, a part of the island can be visited for free as this part is occupied by restaurants, bars and shops.
The Isola Superiore or Isola dei Pescatori. This island does not need any entrance tickets. On the island there are no sumptuous palaces but the village is very characteristic. Then on this island there are some excellent restaurants;).
Beautiful island
Until 1630 Isola Bella was only a rock inhabited by fishermen but today it is one of the most beautiful things to visit on Lake Maggiore for the magnificent Borromeo palace and its gardens which have been included among the most beautiful gardens in the world by sites and specialized magazines.
Lake Maggiore Borromean Islands Italy: Isola Bella
Fishermen Island
Isola Pescatori can be easily reached by boat from Stresa, Verbania Pallanza and Baveno. To take the boat you do not need special reservations. You can also buy the ticket just before boarding.
Access to Isola Pescatori is free and you do not have to pay any entrance ticket apart from a small tax from the municipality of Stresa, already included in the amount paid to take the boat. When to visit Isola Pescatori? The best time is certainly during the summer but it is also a good idea to come during the winter.
Why come to Isola Pescatori? Because it is very characteristic and beautiful to explore especially after a good lunch in one of the restaurants found here. Hours spent on this island are always special.

Isola Madre or the Mother Island
Isola Madre, already owned by the Borromeo family from around 1500, is now worth a visit, especially for its garden. Today of Isola Madre is a unique botanical garden for rare plant essences from all over the world.

Lake Maggiore Cannero Riviera Italy – Cannero Riviera is a splendid Lake Maggiore town and is known first of all for two things: for its beautiful lakefront and its wide beach.
I can say that, unlike other locations on Lake Maggiore, Cannero Riviera has a double personality. Very lively and lively in the summer but extremely quiet in the winter. In fact, Cannero Riviera empties in winter. Watch the following videos to better understand what I mean.

Itinerary from Cannero Riviera
After visiting Cannero Riviera, you can explore the nearby towns and places of interest. The best way to do it is by boat because you can enjoy the beauty of Lake Maggiore more fully.
Castles of Cannero
We had a nice winter walk in Cannero Riviera and planned to visit Cannobio. We could have been gone there by car because it takes only about 10 minutes but there is another option: the boat.
From the Imbarcadero of Cannero Riviera, you can take the boat for Cannobio. It’s true that you spend more in this way but you also have beautiful views. From Cannero Riviera to Cannobio the boat went directly passing very close to the Castles of Cannero. Between the Lake Maggiore coast and the Castles of Cannero.

Instead, on the way back, the boat from Cannobio went first to Luino, on the other side of the lake, to go back then to Cannero Riviera. In this way, we admired better this part of Lake Maggiore and see the Castles of Cannero from another viewpoint.

Cannobio
In the preceding videos, we were on the boat at Lake Maggiore. We passed close to the Castles of Cannero and admired the beauty of Lake Maggiore. If you watched our videos, you know that our destination was Cannobio. In this video, we finally get to Cannobio during our recent adventure at Lake Maggiore at the beginning of December.
The weather was beautiful with sunshine. That’s true that on the boat, I got frozen to record this video, but in Cannero Riviera we had just had a relaxing walk on a pretty warm day of December. Of course, it was not hot because we are in December, but it was pleasing.
So we decided to have lunch in the main Cannobio square, which is in front of the lake. We really enjoyed the sun and so we said: let’s have lunch outside. The only problem was that the restaurant took a lot of time to bring us our food.
What is the problem? In Cannero, the sun goes down in the early afternoon, especially because the mountain is very close to the town and the mountains hide the sun gradually. The result? At 2 pm, the restaurant was all in the shade and soon after all the other part of the square. After a while, we were all frozen, also those more living of the cold (not me). We really enjoyed our time spent at Cannobio and we would like to go back also tomorrow. Still, if you can go to Cannobio in the morning, you have more time to eat outside when it’s sunny, also when the people in the restaurant take more time to bring you your order!.
Lake Maggiore Italy things to do: visit Cannobio!
Because without the sun it was cold, soon after lunch (after all it was 3 pm), we took the boat to come back to Cannero Riviera. Before getting to Cannero Riviera, the boat brought us to the other side of Lake Maggiore and stopped at Luino. It was sunny on the other side of the lake because the sun could still reach the town. From Luino to Cannero Riviera, I could enjoy the lake view, the Castles of Cannero, and a romantic sunset! You can see the pictures here in the following gallery.

Hi Everybody! We are in Cannobio Lake Maggiore. We now see the beautiful panoramic navigation by boat to get to Cannobio and the beauty of Cannobbio from the boat. See you in the following video! Bye!
Baveno is a perfect place to visit in Spring and Summer but it’s also a good idea in winter. What can I do in Baveno in Winter? Let’s watch the following video to find a very good idea for a special day!
Video text:
Hi everybody, we are in Baveno on Lake Maggiore in winter. Let’s enjoy this relaxing walk. Our final destination is Fisherman Island or Isola Pescatori. In front of us is the famous Hotel Dino. Very famous hotel here on the lake.
And then in front of us is Pallanza, where we see the characteristic bell tower of the church. Then we have the Isola Madre or Mother Island and then Laveno, where you can take the cable car to get to the top of the Sasso del Ferro. And here on the other side, we have the other 2 islands.
The Beautiful Island and the Fisherman Island. And as we said, here the famous Dino hotel. Let’s continue our walk!
This is very cute. Because we can see all these flowers. And then we always have a view of the 2 islands. Now they can be seen in the distance. The Beautiful Island and the Fisherman Island.
Here in Baveno you can walk quietly. And in front of us … … we also have the Imbarcadero or landing stage. Where you can take the boat. For the Islands. Or for Pallanza for example.
It is now December and therefore everything is very quiet. Few people around. But during the summer there are many people. Here we are at the Imbarcadero or landing stage right in front of us.
Where we can take the boat for, in our case, the Fisherman Island or Isola Pescatori. Going to the Fisherman Island or Isola Pescatori is a good idea even in winter because there are so many good restaurants.
We are now on the boat because we’re having lunch at the Isola Pescatori! We can now see the Fisherman Island or Isola Pescatori! We’re now arrived!
See you in the following video! Bye!

Feriolo
Feriolo is a small town on Lake Maggiore and remains under the municipality of Baveno. Feriolo is one of the most characteristic villages of Lake Maggiore and has its own unmistakable profile.
If you don’t have much time to dedicate to this location, I recommend that you park your car in the parking lot that you find right on the main road.
From here with a few steps, you can reach the gazebo which offers you a beautiful view of Feriolo di Baveno.
I personally love to stop and admire Feriolo both during the day and in the evening. Feriolo is really beautiful in the evening. In fact, the moment of the day I prefer to admire Feriolo is in the evening, when the lights of the town are reflected on the lake and the town takes on a magical atmosphere.
What to do in Feriolo?
Here are the main things to do in Feriolo:
See the country from a gazebo and take a nice selfie here
Take a nice walk around the lakefront
In the summer, relax and sunbathe on the beach: Feriolo, for being such a small town on Lake Maggiore, is full of beaches. In particular we have one in front of the town center when the lake level is not too high and a wide beach at the bottom, after the town.
Try the restaurants and choose your favorite restaurant. Did you know there’s a restaurant on a boat here?
Feriolo in winter
Feriolo in winter is an extremely quiet place, even too quiet. If you want to take a nice walk, Feriolo is an excellent idea, but on the lakefront, it is easy to find everything closed. If you want to find some open bars you have to head towards the main road. At this point, if you want to eat or have breakfast, better choose Baveno, Verbania, or the Fisherman Island.
Enjoy this beautiful walk in Feriolo in winter, in the following video we are in the first days of December.
Lake Maggiore Verbania what to do? Verbania is a beautiful city on Lake Maggiore. There are really a lot of things to do and visit here. If you have only a few days there are 5 things you can easily visit and they are:

Walking along the lakefront of Pallanza is really pleasant. You can enjoy a wonderful panorama and get up to Suna.
Verbania Pallanza Photo Gallery
In the following series of videos, I take you on a virtual walk along the Verbania lakefront From Pallanza to Suna.
Video 1 Verbania Pallanza
Hello everyone! We are in Pallanza Verbania on Lake Maggiore. In front of us, we see Villa Giulia. Villa Giulia was built in 1847 by Bernardino Branca, the inventor of Fernet. It was his son who dedicated the villa to his wife Giulia. This is why it is called Villa Giulia.
In front of us is the Milano restaurant and behind the bell tower of the church of San Leonardo. The statue placed on the column of the port acts as a hydrometer and shows the levels of the historic floods of Lake Maggiore.
Here is the stump of the great centuries-old tree to which many Pallanzesi was particularly fond of, felled by the storm that occurred precisely on the date shown on the plate. The small island that is only a few tens of meters from the shore of Pallanza is the Isolino di San Giovanni. The islet of San Giovanni is not as famous as the other Borromean Islands but it always has its charm.
The history of the Isolino di San Giovanni is linked to the famous conductor Arturo Toscanini, who chose it as a place to stay in peace, in the company only of a close circle of friends. We continue our walk admiring the beautiful flowering trees and the romantic panorama of Lake Maggiore.
In Pallanza Lago Maggiore there is still a lot to see… our walk continues in the next video!

Villa Giulia Pallanza
The name of Villa Giulia was given by the old owner Giuseppe Branca (the producer of the famous Amaro Fernet Branca) in honor of his wife Giulia in 1880. After several changes of ownership, the Villa Giulia is now owned by the Municipality of Verbania which, in addition to its park is open to the public and uses it to organize exhibitions and shows.
In the park, you can walk along gravel paths surrounded by majestic trees of different types and beautiful flowers of various colors. There are also benches where you can sit and admire the splendid views of the lake.
Villa Giulia overlooks the part of the lake that forms the Borromeo Gulf where there are four islands with palaces of the Borromeo family and the whole forms an unforgettable spectacle. In the garden, there is also a bar where you can sip a drink immersed in an environment reminiscent of fairy tales.
Inside the beautiful Villa Giulia, events and shows are often organized, open to the public, which are very pleasant and interesting. Yes, Villa Giulia with its garden is certainly a pearl of Verbania Pallanza and Lake Maggiore.

Verbania Pallanza Video 4
After a short break in this very special corner, we can continue our walk along the Verbania lakeside. In the previous videos from Pallanza, we have now arrived in Suna.
Just below us, we are now seeing the swimming pool beach, the lake pool, and the free beach. This beach is certainly perfect in summer when it is possible to lie down to sunbathe and swim but it has its beauty in every season. It is in fact beautiful and relaxing just to sit on the steps to admire the view … and the nice friends who come to visit you.
Continuing our journey we see some very characteristic corners of the Verbania lakeside, up to the old Suna pier, where we now find a bar that is clearly called the Imbarcadero bar. Going beyond the dock bar we enter the heart of the Suna lakefront but see in the next video!

2. Isola Madre or Mother Island
Isola Madre, already owned by the Borromeo family from around 1500, is now worth a visit, especially for its garden. Today that of Isola Madre is a unique botanical garden for rare plant essences from all over the world.
In spring-summer, you can appreciate the beauty of the gardens of Isola Madre already from the boat. The vegetation that covers it is always something beautiful to admire.
It is important to know that access to Isola Madre is only possible with the purchase of the ticket. In fact, when you get off the boat you will immediately find the entrance gate.
This is in fact a substantial difference compared to other Borromean Islands such as Isola Bella, in which there is the palace and gardens to be visited with an entrance ticket but also a free area with stalls, bars, and restaurants.
