Porto Flavia Sardinia Italy how to get there? History? – post being updating

Porto Flavia is located in the southwest of Sardinia, more precisely in Masua. This is a magnificent area of Sardinia thanks to the wonderful sea, the majestic coast characterized by rock formations and, as if all this were not enough, here we also have Porto Flavia, which is absolutely worth visiting.

The former Porto Flavia mine is not only interesting from a historical point of view but also extremely scenic. This is especially true when you visit it from the sea as you can admire this fascinating complex set in the rock and overlooking the sea.

Even the visit inside is, however, really interesting and scenographic: at a certain point, you find yourself on a balcony directly overlooking the sea. A beautiful observation point from which to admire this extraordinary panorama.

Then, thanks to the visit to Porto Flavia you can discover interesting details of its history. For example: Was Porto Flavia really a mine? No, to be more precise, it was the futuristic port of embarkation for the material extracted from the nearby mines, designed by the Venetian engineer Cesare Vecelli and built-in 1924. So it certainly had to do with mining, but here the mines were not extracted. materials but embarked.

Thanks to a rail transport system, the materials were transported to the opening on the sea, where the ships on which to load the material were positioned. This was an absolutely innovative method that saved a great deal of time. Suffice it to say that what has loaded in a month thanks to the Porto Flavia system could be loaded in just one week.

Despite all this, Porto Flavia remained in operation for only a few decades. Due to the global increase in competitiveness, mining was stopped here in Sardinia as it was too expensive compared to countries like China.

Now the Sarde and Porto Flavia mines are no longer in operation, but the charm of these places remains intact. The photos of Porto Flavia nestled in the rock in a unique and wonderful scenery make it around the world effortlessly.

How to get to Porto Flavia?

Let’s go find out!

Porto Flavia is located in the southwest of Sardinia in Italy, not far from Iglesias.

Many think that Porto Flavia was a mine. Is it really so?

No, it was the futuristic port of embarkation for the material extracted from the nearby mines, designed by the Venetian engineer Cesare Vecelli and built-in 1924.

Thanks to a rail transport system, the materials were transported to the opening on the sea, where the ships on which to load the material were positioned.

This absolutely innovative method allowed to save a great deal of time.

Now the mines in this area are no longer in operation and therefore also Porto Flavia but remain fascinating places to visit in this unique setting.

How to get to Porto Flavia?

There are 3 main ways to see and get to Porto Flavia.

If you want to see Porto Flavia from the sea, I recommend starting with a boat, for example with the rubber dinghy from Masua beach, the closest equipped beach to Porto Flavia.

There are several tour options offered to choose from.

You can also take a boat tour from Cala Domestica or Buggerru.

In this case, however, you will only see Porto Flavia from the outside.

If you want to visit Porto Flavia inside you can also get there by car.

Do the road as if you were going to Masua beach but once you get to the parking lot, turn right to take the uphill road.

Do not stop at the first parking but continue following the dirt road.

When you arrive at this parking lot.

Park your car and continue on foot.

While walking, you can admire the imposing Faraglione (the big rock in the water) of Pan di Zucchero.

In the end, you arrive in front of the ticket office and the entrance, ready for your guided tour.

Inside Porto Flavia, you will walk in long tunnels admiring the different types of rocks and discovering more details of the history of this place and the life of the people who worked here.

In the end, you will find yourself under the famous Porto Flavia writing, and you’ll admire the sea and the Pan di Zucchero huge rock from an absolutely privileged position.

What if you don’t have a car and maybe you don’t stay near Iglesias but in Cagliari?

You can use the public transport service consisting of the train that takes you from Cagliari to Iglesias + bus Porto Flavia link that from Iglesias takes you right to Porto Flavia.

You can buy tickets at https://www.trenitalia.com/

Visit inside the Porto Flavia mine

Are you feeling adventurous, do you want to explore and want to learn more about the history of this place? Then the visit inside the Porto Flavia mine is the right choice for you.

The visit to the mine is not a visit that you can do on your own but includes a guided tour. Online you can buy tickets for a specific date and time (at the site http://www.visitiglesias.comune.iglesias.ca.it/it/vacanza/biglietteria-online/index.html ), but if you are not sure of your program, you can also buy tickets directly at the ticket office of the mine.

The choice of whether to buy tickets earlier or not also depends on the time of year you visit the mine. If you go during high season, you should pre-purchase the tickets to have the visit booked and not risk not finding a seat.

The Poetto beach

Poetto beach is the city beach of Cagliari. This beach divides the sea into salt flats where you can admire the beautiful flamingos.

You can admire the Poetto beach from above in the following video.

Castle of San Michele Cagliari

The San Michele Castle is inside San Michele Park. This park has undergone a notable historical evolution.

The San Michele Park is located in the northern part of the city on a hill at 120 meters above sea level. You enter the park via a stone path marked by wooden fences through the hairpin bends surrounded by pine trees. Here the white of the limestone rocks alternates with the green of the agaves and Mediterranean essences.

On top of the San Michele Park hill stands the medieval Castle of San Michele, even if the first plant was of Byzantine origins. The elevated position of the Castle offers a vast and breathtaking view. It goes from the Campidano plain to the Sella del Diavolo.

The Pisans built the Castle of San Michele. Subsequently, it passed to the Catalan, Aragonese, conquerors of the kingdom of Sardinia. It was besieged in the fourteenth century resisting the troops of the Arborea, rulers of the last surviving Sardinian judged.

After becoming the fortified residence of the Carroz family, the Castle offered refuge to dangerous fugitives for a certain period, so much so that the councilors of the Municipality of Cagliari asked the sovereign in vain to requisition it and have it demolished.

In 1652, during a plague epidemic, it was used as a hospital, then went through a phase of decline during the Austrian and Piedmontese periods.

From 1820 to ’48, it became a barracks for the disabled.

In 1895 its new owner, Roberto di San Tommaso, had it restored by the architect Dionigi Scano and surrounded it with the still present pine forest.

From 1929 to 1972, it was a radiotelegraph station of the Navy.

The Castle is currently a modern center of art and culture and hosts exhibitions. The visit inside the Castle is, of course, enjoyable.

Still, if you don’t have enough time for a complete visit coming here to the top of the hill to see the Castle from the outside and admire the vast surrounding panorama is also a good idea.

You need a ticket to visit the castle but the Castle square with the view is free.

Mari Pintau beach

Mari Pintau is a beautiful beach set between the blue colors of the sea and the Sardinian mountains. As we can see, even near the city of Cagliari we find magnificent beaches and Mari Pintau Beach is a great example!

Porto Giunco beach and Stagno di Notteri

Porto Giunco beach is located near Villasimius, on the southeastern tip of Sardinia.

Porto Giunco beach is a beautiful beach washed by a crystalline sea and it is possible to walk safely in the water as the seabed is shallow near the beach.

The main feature of Porto Giunco beach is that the beach acts as a dividing line between the sea and the Stagno di Notteri. This division has not always existed. In more ancient times, in fact, the sea reached inside the pond allowing this area to become a Phoenician port as has emerged from the studies conducted in the area.

The division created over time makes this place unique: on one side the transparent sea of Sardinia and on the other a pond that hosts flamingos.

Those who come to this beach, therefore, have 2 options: a nice refreshing bath or a nice walk along the pond for a more naturalistic observation.

You can see the beach in the following video:

Porto Giunco beach is a very long beach with several accesses. On the main access road to the beach, you will find several ways to turn to access the various car parks. This video was recorded in the final part of the beach but you can also park towards the beginning of the beach very well.

Text of the video:

We are in Porto Giunco!

Hi Everybody! From the parking lot, we walk a short distance and in front of us, we find the beautiful Porto Giunco beach,  in the south Sardinia, near Villasimius.

Porto Giunco is not only one of the most famous beaches of Villasimius but also on the whole island. What are the characteristics that make it so famous?

A transparent sea washes the white beach. The shallow and sandy seabed makes it an ideal destination for families with children.

Being a known beach is very busy, maybe not the favorite for those who love peace and tranquility, but the beach is long and wide, so you shouldn’t struggle to find a place to lie down.

Porto Giunco beach is not only known for its beautiful sea. It’s particular because enclosed between a lagoon and the sea.

You can drive along the pond for a while, passing through Via Dei Ginepri.

However, you can get to the pond also directly from the beach. Let’s go to explore!

The Pond of Notteri has no connection with the sea and is shallow: thus it favors the presence of pink flamingos. Here you can admire both pink flamingos and other migratory birds.

After this walk, we relax and enjoy this beautiful sea. Bye and see you on the next adventure!

Food to eat in Italy: What should I eat in Italy?

Food to eat in Italy pizza pisa scaled

Eating in italian is mangiare and it’s an important part of the Italian life. There are many different types of food to eat in Italy and food can make your trip to Italy more special. You can taste different food and if you travel from north to south you can see how food becomes more abundant and more seasoned.

Anyway the main rules for the food to Eat in Italy are always almost the same. Let’s start to consider the food you can eat in Italy in the morning.

The most important letters of the alphabet for italian food are only 2: C and P.

C as Coffee and Cappuccino

P as Pasta and Pizza

Food to eat in Italy in the Morning: Breakfast

The breakfast is small and sweet. In the hotels you often find the international breakfast with ham, eggs, sausages and much more but if you want a true italian breakfast, forget about all of these things.

The real protagonists of the italian breakfast are Coffee, Cappuccino and Brioche. Let’s spend a few words for each one of them.

Coffee. When in Italy we speak about coffee we mean espresso. When the italians order an espresso they simply ask for a coffee. If you enter in a cafe and you order an espresso it means you are not an italian.

After you order a coffee they may ask you a lot of questions because there are many options. If you don’t know what to answer simply say: normale. In this way you’ll get simply a normal italian coffee.

Cappuccino. Cappuccino is milk with a little bit of coffee. The cappuccino is for the breakfast anyway you can order it in any part of day. Cappuccino has a little foam made by milk on the top. This is what makes cappuccino so delicious and different from milk and coffee. You can also add cocoa in order to make it more tasty. Cappucino can be also lactose free.

food to eat in italy cappuccino

Brioche is the solid part of the breakfast. The brioche is a Croissant that can be empty, with cocoa cream, with marmellade or cream.

In the hotel you can also find cakes, bread, marmalade and much more.

Lunch and Dinner

The main meals are lunch and dinner. In the restaurants you find the menu divided in 4 main parts:

Antipasti which are the starters that include smoked fish, the salami and the cheese.

Primi piatti where you find all the pasta they have,

Secondi piatti where you find meat and fish

and last but not least i dolci or desserts.

During important occasions or when celebrating events Italians have a complete meal with antipasto, primo, secondo and dolce. Anyway they normally order only pasta and meat or fish, alternatively antipasto (Starters) and Pasta.

So because you are in Italy you should taste all kinds of pasta. Pasta can be fresh and egg based such as tagliatelle, lasagne, tortellini and ravioli. Other kinds of pasta such as spaghetti, maccheroni, penne and rigatoni are dried instead.

food to eat in italy

Taste pasta with different sauces made with meat, fish, mushrooms or vegetables. In Emila Romagna taste the ragù alla bolognese. Did you know the word Ragù? In Italy we ask for pasta al ragù and not pasta bolognese. Then in Italy don’t ask for pasta with meatballs: it isn’t an italian food!

best-day-trips-from-milan

Cheese makes pasta with meat, mushrooms and vegetables more delicious. So at the restaurant the waiter brings you grated cheese that can be grana padano, parmigiano reggiano or pecorino. But don’t ask cheese when you have pasta with a fish sauce: it’s not used and the waiter has all the good reasons to look at you badly.

Food to eat in Italy? Pizza

When you go in a Pizzeria and they bring you a menu you may be confused by all kind of pizzas there are. Anyway you can normally also ask for a pizza with your favourite ingredients. During your trip in Italy take the occasion to taste more kinds of pizzas: the pizza is so delicious!

Food to eat in Italy

Aperitivo or Apettizer

A big trend in the last few years is the Apettizer. In many bars it starts about at 6 p.m. and it may finish at 9 p.m. You order something to drink and they bring you also something to eat.

food to eat in italy

Throughout the years the apettizer includes more food and in many bars it is called apericena. You can eat a lot and avoid dinner.

This is a good occasion to taste wine, relax and taste other delicious food.
